Sky Sports has teamed up with GameOn, a mobile engagement platform for sports fans, to create a chatbot to accompany its popular Soccer Saturday broadcast.
The ‘Jeff Bot’, named after the legendary long time host of the Sky’s Gillette Soccer Saturday show Jeff Stelling, is available through Messenger, Slack, Skype and Telegram. It features real-time game commentary and responds to natural language requests from fans about news, scores, stats, and more about the teams they support and games they follow. It is also said to capture the personality of the man it is named after to create ‘fun engagement that fans, league, and advertisers love’.
“We’re always looking for new and innovative methods to better connect with fans and deliver more entertaining ways for our audience to enjoy the sports they love,” said, David Gibbs, Digital Director for Sky Sports & Sky News. “Working with GameOn allows us to try something different with Chatbots and introduce a new experience that’s consistent with the Sky Sports tone and feel that fans enjoy.”
The chatbot welcomes fans with tips on navigating the bot and an option to follow their favourite teams. Based on these favourite teams, users will be sent trending news each morning and evening and real-time updates during live games – in addition to the requests these fans can make.
Alex Beckman, founder and CEO of GameOn: “This common thread of chat engagement and AI bots are huge opportunities for us in some of the largest leagues in the world. Chatbots are changing the media dynamic, advertising model, and the fan experience overall.”
